Signs, Symptoms, Transmissions of roundworms

Signs : Spaghetti like worms (ascarids) 4 to 6 inches (10-15cm) long found in the feces and in the vomit of the dog, or laboratory analysis of a stool sample showing worm eggs. The worms live in the small intestine.

Symptoms : Weight loss, diarrhea with bloating, anemia, and in puppies, interference with development. The larvae are carried in blood stream to the liver and lungs where they can cause hepatitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

Transmission : Puppies are generally already infected in the uterus through the mother's blood. Worms are found in their stool by the time they are 4 weeks old.

Signs, Symptoms, Transmissions of tapeworms

Signs : Mobile body segments 5-10mm long and whitish, found in the dog's stool and the hair around the anus.

Symptoms : Rough coat, intermittent diarrhea, weight loss in spite of good appetite, itchy anus.

Transmission : Primarily through ingestion of raw meat and internal organs of beef, goat, sheep, deer but also through eating mice, rats and fleas. These intermediary hosts are in turn infected by dog and cat feces and fox droppings. The most common tapeworm of dogs uses fleas as intermediary host. That is why deworming is important if a dog is infected with fleas. The so called fox tapeworm is extremely rare in dogs.
