Symptoms : Sudden itching, such as the dog scractches its nose with its paw and rub the muzzle
against the ground, salivating, swelling, choking, vomiting, breathing difficulties.
Causes : Bee, wasp, or hornet stings in the mouth or throat.
Effect : Allergic reaction with serious swelling of the lips, tongue or inside the mouth.
The bigger the swelling, the greater the danger of suffocation because of the narrowing of the air passage.
If the swelling is minor, dab the area with ice water or disinfecting alcohol(lsopropyl 50%
available at drug stores) until the swelling goes down. If the swelling is large and the dog salivates, vomits, and have trouble breathing, call the veterinarian immediately. The vet will give the dog antihistamines and/or cortisone to counteract the allergic reaction. If the throat swells shut, only a tracheotomy can save the animal.
Prevention : break the dog of the habit of snapping insects.
