Symptoms, effect and causes
Symptoms : Milky to bluish opacity of the lens, dilated pupils but usually not obvious, acute symptoms such as tearing.
Causes : Cataracts are in most hereditary, but they can also be bought on by other disorder of the eye, such as retinal atrophy, prolapsed lens and serious infections or injuries of the eye. Diabetes always causes cataracts in old age.
Effect : Gradual blindness as cataract grows. Development of glaucoma.
Treatment
Consult the vet. Some animal clinics perform cataract surgery in which the lens is removed or replaced with an implant. But this operation is necessary only if both eyes are affected because a cataract in one eye is no problem for a dog as long as it is not likely to lead to glaucoma.
Follow up care : The dog has to be kept stationary and have the head bandage changed daily. An Elizabethan collar is necessary so that the eye can heal undisturbed.
Prevention : Many products are available, but none of them are effective because in most cases cataracts are hereditary or are due to old age.
Susceptible breeds
Cataracts are the most widespread hereditary disorder in dogs. Most breeds are susceptible, but cataracts are most prevalent in poodles, spaniels, golden and labrador retrievers, schnauzers, bull terriers, and collies.
