Vegetarian Dogs

Dogs are meat-eaters by nature but somehow most people believe that. Dogs (and Wolves) being predators, rely on eating a high protein diet they can get from meat. Their digestive systems are well adapted to breaking down proteins and using them efficiently. Although most dog food producers are geared to a meat protein and supplement diet, more and more vegetarian foods are being produced. However, do not be surprised that dogs were never carnivores.

Dogs are able to live full, healthy lives on a Vegetarian Dog Food diet. Vegetarian diets are not only for dogs with health problem, but for normal healthy dogs as well. Vegetarian diets can be essential for those dogs that have dietary sensitive problems (allergies) with foods made with animal proteins. Vegetarian diet would also greatly reduce the risks of cancer, strokes, heart attacks, and other common diseases and disorders in dogs.

Vegetarian Dog Food Label

Here, I use the Evanger's Vegetarian food as sample. You can see that the food is suitable for both dogs and cats. This canned vegetarian dog food stated that it met the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO dog and cat food nutrient for all life stages. You can read more about AAFCO standard to understand what it means.

On the canned it shows the feeding guide as well. The feeding guide is stated clearly how much you should feed your pet. Puppies, kittens, pregnant and nursing dogs and cats may require 2 to 3 times the adult amounts. Serving size can be reduced for less active and older dogs and cats. Actual amount of food your dog or cat require depends on activity, age, environment and breed. However, fresh water is still to be made available to your pet at all times despite it is a vegetarian diet.
