Poodle dog is a very active, intelligent, and elegant appearing dog. Poodle dog carry himself proudly and moving soundly. The standard poodle is 15 inches (38cm) at the highest point of the shoulders. The miniature poodle breed is 15 inches (38cm) or under at the highest point of the shoulders with minimum height in excess of 10 inches(25cm). The toy poodle is 10 inches (25cm) or under at the highest point of the shoulders. Poodles have curly coats that need frequent brushing and professional grooming. But poodles hardly shed, which makes this breed an excellent choice for allergic people. The ears hang down, and the tail is docked. Although parti-colors are seen, only solid colors - black, white, gray, blue, silver, cream, red, apricot, chocolate (dark brown) and cafe au lait (light brown) may be shown.
The standard poodle originated in Germany or Russia as a duck retriever. The name poodle comes from the German word pudelin, which means "to splash in the water". France was responsible for using the breed as a show and circus dog, which gave rise to the common reference "French poodle". The standard was bred down to the miniature and toy varieties.
